David Goldwich got their new book cover by running a design contest:
Business speaker needs a new book cover
Check out David Goldwich's Book cover contest…
I am a speaker and corporate trainer specializing in persuasion. I have written a few other books, but this is the first time I am going online to get a design. I do not know all the requirements of book cover design but it has to be suitable for that purpose.
What's your vision?
I am writing a book and I need a cover design. The book is called Kickass Business Presentations: How to Persuade Your Audience Every Time. The tone is conversational, irreverent, contrarian, and bold, not like most books on the subject. I will provide copy. The back cover will be three or four testimonials, and I may also have flaps with additional copy. The front cover should be mainly the title and subtitle and my name, no cheesy photo of a microphone or a guy in a boardroom. I would like to incorporate a silhouette of a man in a kickboxing pose, with fists close to body and one leg extended or cocked preparing to kick. This can be the main graphic element, or appear in a triangle or stylized "A" in "KICKASS". I need to own all rights to this image as well as the overall work. The kickboxer image can also appear on the spine. I want a bold and simple look. It should stand out in the section of business books at the airport newsstand.
The book will be A5 size (210 x 148 mm 8.3 x 5.8 inches). The design has to be appropriate for this scale, and have a place for a bar code on the back and all the other elements of a book cover. I want the work to be high res enough to enlarge and reproduce on one of those 6' (two meters) banners. It will also be used for an ebook version. It does not have to match my website www.davidgoldwich.com but it should not be incompatible with it.

And then… they selected a winner!
Excellent design ideas that matched the content and narrative of my book. Responsive, followed through, and professional. Well worth the price.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
