I am looking for a high-concept cover for a serious literary novel aimed at an older, primarily female, college-educated audience. The setting is Martha's Vineyard, a classic and traditional New England seacoast island with small towns, cottages and flower pots and sailboats. Nothing on the cover should appear urban, sleek, modern, or Euro style. Thematic elements are nautical, pastoral, floral, quaint, traditional, tastefully wealthy. Think Talbot's, J. Crew, Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, Vineyard Vines and Martha Stewart, not Miami Vice or Armani or Las Vegas or Real Housewives of New Jersey or Long John Silver's. Think Garden & Gun and Town & Country, not Maxim or Cosmopolitan. The cover should appear to suggest something subtle, beautiful, oblique. It should not be too busy, too campy, or too heavy handed. More Andrew Wyeth than Norman Rockwell. The novel has three beautiful, Ivy-League educated female protagonists in their early thirties. Any cover that features people should show all or part of one woman or three women, not two women. One has black hair, one blonde, one brown. The book should have no men on the cover. A tastefully concealed artistic nude female might be OK, as there are themes of sexuality in the book, but the cover should not be suggestive of sex. Other elements that might work, but not all together, would be classic wooden sailing yawls, blush blue hydrangeas, white picket fences, pink roses, New England style lighthouses, small village lanes amid classic New England clapboard houses, sea oats and sandy paths, and old wooden dory on a lonely beach with fishing nets, harbors and anchorages, a large mansion in a pastoral setting overlooking the sea, a pebble-strewn beach. With or without people on the cover, scenes might include a sandy beach, marshes and estuaries, a bright sea, a moonlit sea, Adirondack chairs on a pastoral lawn overlooking the sea, one-speed bicycles with Nantucket straw baskets on the handlebars, wildflowers. Other people scenes could include women in wind-blown sundresses with wind-blown hair and beach bags, nautical signal flags and wind-blown flags, a perfect table setting of summer china in the garden of a beautiful, classic home with flowers and arbors and gardens. The back cover should incorporate either an author headshot or half-length shot to be provided and the text shown in the cover-mockup shown in the file attached. Some of author's photos of Martha's Vineyard, where the novel is set, are included for reference, but I don't consider a "design" something that just slaps one of my own photos on the cover.
