We are a manufacturer in a subset of the construction industry. We manufacture tooling for only trenchless drillers in the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Industry. So, our tools are beefy, metal, mean looking things that appeal to drillers. Our target audience is construction workers that often have a high-school educations level, a bit rough around the edges, but loyal beyond belief to a brand. There are three major players in the industry; Melfred Borzall (us), Ditch Witch, and Vermeer. Each has their own signature color that everyone knows the tooling by. Ditch Witch is Orange, Vermeer is yellow, and we are Red (see hex value for reference). The names of our tooling are over-testosteroned on purpose (Terminator, Eagle Claw, Shredder, Juggernaut, etc.) because it appeals to our audience. Our old mascot, the "Directional Dude" was created in the early 90's and he was wearing tights (don't ask me why, and don't ask why he's purple) and a bit cheesy looking. We want to bring him into our generation and appeal to today's driller. Our audience is a bit crude, but we have made a concerted effort as a company to appeal to this persona without being vulgar in any way. it's a fine line! If you need inspiration, google "HDD rig" and you'll see the type of machine these guys run all day. our website is http://www.melfredborzall.com. I'm open to interpretation, but just keep in mind our target audience.
What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?
We need a full body illustration of the directional dude and our company logo (attached below) incorporated in the design.
Melfred Borzall tools are considered the Ferrari of underground drilling tools. We are the highest priced on the market, but that also the best quality. If someone has a tough job they can't afford to risk breaking a tool in the middle of...they buy our tools. We have built this loyalty and cult following of our tools mainly because we started the industry. Our founder, Fred Melsheimer, was the first to horizontally bore and underground tunnel with the technology that is now turned into a complete industry. There are 3 big names in the industry - Ditch Witch, Vermeer, and Melfred Borzall and each have a signature color that identifies them. We are Red and you'll hear a driller commonly say, "I only run red tools"...he's referring to us. Same for Vermeer and Ditch witch...but no matter the color, a driller is very loyal to that brand and it becomes part of his identity. We need a full body illustration of the directional dude and our logo incorporated in the design. Whether our logo is on him our around can be open for creative interpretation.
