Entertainment & The Arts
We are a kids film school - we love teaching kids how to make their own movies!
What's your vision?
Illustrators please note: We are looking for someone who we can form a relationship with, to continue working on this book with us. Eventually, we'll be requiring a large number of illustrations for the interior & we hope to find someone fantastic who we can work with over the coming months :) We will give ongoing feedback to entrants and work with you to ensure you get the support you need to create the right illustration. Now, for the info: Design the Cover Illustration for Our First Book! Our business is a kids film school, based in Melbourne, Australia. We teach children and teenagers how to make their own movies. This is our first book, and will be sold internationally in both hard copy & ebook formats. Our brand is fun, young and obviously all about movies! Check out our website for a little more insight into what we currently do: http://www.buzzmoviemakers.com.au The target audience for this book is kids aged between 8 & 14, who want a manual to guide them through the process of making a film. It will be accompanied by a DVD training program, and the working title is 'A Kid, A Camera & A Big Idea'. There is a lot of technical info in the book, but we want the illustrations to help give the info more clarity, and make the book look really exciting. There are very few other books on the market in this vein, but please see attached images for 2 covers of those that exist currently. We obviously want to improve on what they have done(!) We're open to some suggestions from illustrators with regards to a central image. There are a couple of options there: - Stick with the kinds of images generally used on these kinds of books OR - Think outside the box and create something a bit more unique, that still communicates what the book is about. (We have been told that it's best to commission an illustration first, before having the cover design done. However, we welcome any input from illustrators who also have design experience & have an idea for an overall 'look'. In this instance, we can provide further information regarding text that needs to be included, etc.) IDEAS FOR ILLUSTRATION INSPIRATION!! We don't have an exact central image in mind, but here are some ideas for inspiration: - A scene showing kids on a makeshift film set, shooting a movie - One kid holding a camera/clapperboard/other movie-related item - Kids in some kind of over the top Hollywood scene (dressed up like famous characters/being chased by aliens/the possibilities are endless!) - Maybe a kid who is daydreaming movie ideas, & we can see his vision in a thought bubble - Another idea that you may have!! The image needs to really stand out and be colourful, without being too childish and 'kiddy' - remember, some of the readers will be teenagers, so we don't want anything that will put them off! Out brand colours are purple, orange & black - however, it is not imperative that they form the theme of the image, as they can feature elsewhere on the cover design. The image also needs to look great as a thumbnail, as the book will be viewed in that way by online shoppers. So, much as we do love detailed illustrations, we also need you to find a balance there & also create something bold that won't be lost when the image (& indeed, the entire book cover) is viewed at thumbnail size. The main feelings we want to put across are excitement, fun, and a sense of wonder or intrigue that kids are entering into a really cool, exclusive film world. Also a sense of imagination. There is a certain type of drawing style that we absolutely love, and we ask you to study the attached images carefully to get a sense of that style. We love illustrations drawn on digital drawing tablets and love pictures that look really slick and polished, while still having a sense that they've been drawn by someone, rather than created by a computer. Not a big fan of overly simplistic characters or vector-style images... Don't know if that makes much sense (I'm not an illustrator!), but I've tried to explain as best I can :) If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. As I said before, we'll also offer lots of ongoing feedback & really want to guide you as best we can. We look forward to getting your submissions and can't wait to see what you come up with!!!
The illustrator will receive a credit on the cover of the book and on the title page, "Illustrated by..." as well as a bio and contact information inside. The contest is ONLY for the one illustration. Any additional illustrations will be separately commissioned & compensated.
