The logo should be in vector format, and a simple design with text near it. My personal color preference is blue/white (see my avatar, plus my other logo). Other colors are OK too - be creative. It just has to be easy on the eyes. The text is secondary - the main focus is the logo itself.
Anyway the site is a technology forum, so something that indicates this without being too flashy chunky.
