2nd page: About Us: Shining Stars gives students the confidence and tools to develop and master skills in areas of need, become happy, well-adjusted students. My passion and desire to help build confidence and smiles among students with Autism can be traced back to 2004. I began working with a grade eight student whose school-based staff said he regularly and frequently demonstrated acting out behaviours. The behaviours ranged from screaming, jumping up and down, non-compliance, running away from teachers and in instances, of extreme cognitive arousal, lunging at school-based staff. Although he could communicate well and had varying academic strengths, his behavior and sensory needs compounded his ability to show the strengths. There were a number of instances where the student was excluded from school and other school-based activities due to his challenges during the school day.
The student transitioned to my care in 2005. He moved from a special education intermediate classroom to a mainstream grade 8 class. Although he had varying skills in academic areas, it was the social challenges that caused others to become hyper-vigilant around him. Without further ado, I developed a structured program for him. He had an individualized visual schedule that indicated in what order his tasks were presented, when his movement breaks were and when he was all finished and ready for dismissal. Within one month, the student was able to sit and attend for up to 30 minutes, developed skills in Reading Comprehension, could transition to and from a break period adaptively and was completely independent during the break periods. He was also attending social conversation groups twice per week with adult supervision. Fast forward twelve years later, the student has a part time job at Boston Pizza, is independently taking the Mississauga Transit to and from his workplace. I came to know that he started driving lessons, with continued adult support. The student is achieving his dreams and the parents are above the moon. As a leader in instructional and behavioural supports for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Shining Stars is proud to acknowledge the success of students like this and others.

Our difference: We work with you and your child to determine academic goals and expectations. Shining Stars uses the most appropriate assessment tool to drive the goals into motion. The assessment will allow us to develop the most appropriate and achievable plan.
Support for Parents: We recognize that the cost of tutoring can be daunting so Shining Stars ensures parents are connected with Special Services at Home Funding and other Community Based funding programs. In addition, we also provide parents with opportunities to sit in for the first session. If requested, parents are coached on how to generalize skills taught for their son or daughter.
Team Intervention: We believe that there are a number of experts involved in your child's education and we want to be part of that team. We would like to hear from your child's teacher, teaching assistants and other school-based staff to ensure continuity of program. Parents, teachers and caregivers are seen as equal partners in the tutoring process.
Caring and Flexible Tutors: We want to ensure your child looks forward to after school tutoring and therefore have looked into hiring the most empathic and supportive in-home tutors.
Provide a Comfortable Atmosphere: Although most students do not mind working 1:1 with a tutor, others may be self-conscious. So Shining Stars ensures that students are happy and comfortable in their learning, stress-free environment.
3rd page: Programs: Assessments: Not sure where to start with your son or daughter, don't fret Shining Stars provides cognitive, speech and language and behavioural assessments using one of our valuable assessment tools. The tool will provide a measurable and achievable baseline goal which your child will work towards mastering. Administering an assessment will help verify where the student's strengths, needs and can be served as a reference guide when assessing the mastery of the skill. Why assess? Identify your child's strengths, preferred activities, learning styles and areas of need. Create an individualized program tailored to those needs. Our assessments, among others, have included: Brigance Inventory of Early Development Skills, Functional Communication Skills Assessment, Scientific Research Associates Language for Learning and Reading Mastery, Grade level language and math assessments.
Language Development: Speech and language development varies from student to student. There are multiple reasons for a student's language skills to develop at a slower or faster pace. Shining Stars has worked with varying language skills-non-verbal, early language learners, English as a Second Language Learning and Verbal students. Tutoring in the areas of language development will help your point or gesture to express him/herself, use a Picture Exchange Communication System, label and identify pictures, express needs and wants, make requests, use full sentences, use language appropriate for social situations, initiate conversations and more.
Literacy Skills: Using our baseline assessment, Shining Stars can teach students beginning reading skills that includes alphabet knowledge, high-frequency word recognition and phonological awareness skills.
Functional Academics and Daily Living Skills: When students transition from elementary to secondary or secondary to post-secondary, it is essential they have a level of confidence to function independently or semi-independently in the community. Our functional academic skills have included teaching students to transition from preferred to non-preferred tasks, handling and working with money, following directions, awareness of safety, reading street signs and knowing who to approach if lost.
Social and Emotional Development: Social and Emotional Development teaches students how to respond to adults and other peers across various settings. Just as other skills are equally imperative, social and emotional learning are an essential life skill. Shining Stars works with students to promote positive reciprocal social skills with adults and other classmates. Parents have the option to enroll their son or daughter in a community-based social skills play groups with students of similar developmental profiles. Some of our student's goals have included: watching other students play and briefly joining, begin to play with other students with adult supervision, using a toy or doll to act our a scene, playing cooperatively in small and large-group games and playing games involving rules.
Subject-Based Support: Whether your child requires additional, in-home support in a specific subject area, Shining Stars ignites students interest so they can understand math and literacy concepts that they may find difficult when taught in a traditional classroom setting. Math concepts have included demonstrating an understanding of number concepts, 1:1 correspondence, data management and probability, making sense of word problems and more.
