Diitalk got their new app design by running a design contest:
Create a unique, modern and sleek user interface for Dingaling: A free calling/messaging app!
Check out Diitalk's App design contest…
On the DingaLing app you can make free dialed phonecalls, peer2peer calls, message other users, post stickers, send pictures, send videos, and exchange files with ease! Call any number- local/long-distance/international- whether it be a cellphone or a land line, DingaLing will connect hassle-free. Make free calls to/from China, India, Singapore, U.S., U.K., and Canada. New free-call markets are on the way! With Dingaling "You're Free To Call"
Please download the current version of the Dingaling app for iOS or Android to get a better idea of the app layout. We want to do a U.I. update that makes the layout more modern, beautiful, flowing, etc. Our rough plan is to incorporate more white (rather than the currently dark setup). We were thinking that the app might look unique/modern if the background was white on all pages, buttons were outlined in purples/greens and normal text was black (see "design mock-up" image). We also thought a shiny texture (similar to the design of iOS 7's calling keypad) might look good on button outlines. Feel free to be creative with your design, you don't have to follow our vision- surprise us with the best design you can! However, we want it to look modern and sleek and it must use our colours. Also be sure to keep apple's app design specifications in-mind, and don't deviate from our current layout too greatly (i.e. page flow etc).
*********************************************************************************** 4 Screens 1) Chat Screen (See included images labeled "Chat_") 2)Dialing Keypad (See Included image labeled "_keypad") 3) Splash Page (See Included image labeled "_splash" 4)) Contacts Page (See Included image labeled "_contacts" ******************************************************************************* Please see attached document: "UI_Spec_iOS_flow" for a complete breakdown of the flow from screen to screen. __________________________________________________________ Below are the "Graphic Interface Design Guidelines": 1) Follow the provided wireframes (attached drawings) The overall layout, flow and features should resemble the wireframe. Minor tweaks to the layout and flow are allowed as long as all the features remain intact. The main goal for this design is to create an overall look and style guide. 2) Create a clean and consistent look The app should follow iOS 7 style conventions. The focus is on the content. However, the app does not have to recreate built-in apps exactly. For example, the keypad can have rounded rectangular buttons instead of circles. 3) Use the standard iOS UIKit where appropriate Most of the UIKit elements can have their appearance modified. 4) Remember to include U.I. states: Many interactive elements of the app have different states. Buttons typically can be in the following states: normal, highlighted, selected, selected+highlighted, and disabled. Provide all images necessary for us to recreate each state (e.g. for each screen provide images of all buttons in each state). Provide a palette of colours and effects used to recreate states where no images are used, such as: buttons with a plain background. If you are relying on system default behaviours, such as: the dimming on navigation bar buttons. View the screen description to determine which states are needed. If not stated, buttons will have a normal and highlighted state. 5) Dynamic changes to the available space The U.I. will need to be adjustable to double status bar height (to show incoming calls and ad banners). Either can appear and disappear at any time. See the wireframes (in attached drawings) for where the ads will be placed. Unless otherwise stated, the device orientation will remain in portrait mode. 6) Screen size Keep the various iOS screen sizes in-mind. The UI must accommodate the different screen sizes for iPhone and iPod devices. This includes existing sizes (3.5” and 4”) and rumoured size increases (Iphone 6). The app appears in iPhone mode on the iPad. 7) Localization UI elements should be adaptable to different lengths based on language- but remain legible. Use English as the base. Avoid putting text inside an image when possible. Use icons and other visual elements to reduce the amount of text. 8) Branding The app must use the brand colours of white, purple, and green in a consistent fashion. Users should be able to tell the difference between an un-decorated button and text. The main idea is to use a white background, with purple and green for buttons, and black for normal text. Variations of the app logo may appear on various screens. The logo should not be confused with a button and should not interfere with the layout. The logo can be incorporated into the background as long as the foreground elements are clearly visible. The silhouettes used for "Contact Images" should be silhouttes of Dingaling's characters instead of people (see Final6Characters.pdf)
What to avoid
-Do not replace the tab bar and navigation bar with alternative navigation methods. -The app should not be easily confused with competitors that have similar colour schemes, such as: Viber. -Avoid deviating too greatly from our wire frame drawings Extra Resources: UI Design Dos and Don'ts https://developer.apple.com/design/tips/ Main Design Page https://developer.apple.com/design/ Designing for iOS 7 https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/MobileHIG/
