Dave B got their new app design by running a design contest:
Creative design for a next-generation mobile phone client
Check out Dave B's App design contest…
Our phone app does what it sounds like - provides standard calling and messaging functionality. But we've developed a highly innovative business model, and want to complement that with a highly innovative app design. We're looking for creative and unique approaches to present these features in a more modern way. This is a mini-project to identify overall style themes that fit the product, and may lead to a more extensive contract to design the full set of workflow screens.
We would like to adhere to mobile design standards, but break phone design standards. Most phone apps all look the same, and aren't particularly efficient or creative, We'd like to change that, but with the primary goal being usability, as opposed to novelty. A key element should be modernizing the phone experience.
Phone App [not yet named]
1) App Home Screen: The app will have a home screen which is not a dial pad, but is a "home base" for all the app functionality. It will be an access point for the other communications functions: dial pad, address book, call history, settings, messages, add-ons, and voice mail. It will also present timely alerts such as "voice mail waiting from andrew" or "missed call from sarah". The interface should include one standard mobile ad block. We're looking for a design that reflects the modern realities of how people use their phone/messaging app... which is quite often not directly typing a phone number into a dialpad. The design should show as many of these described elements as possible. 2) Address Book: The address book screen will allow easy access to call or message a contact. The screen will include the ability to have quick access pre-defined "favorites". Consideration should be given to how assets from Facebook , or LinkedIn can be integrated into the screen. 3) Messaging: The messaging screen will provide for conversation-view messaging between one or more contacts (ie. group messaging). Consideration should be given for how to easily add other contacts to the conversation. Sharing of images should be supported within the interface.
