Art & Design
I run this project as a professional magician in Vienna, Austria, and London, UK. My audience are all kinds of people around the world. No limits.
What's your vision?
I want to print my own playing cards, 52 cards per deck, poker size format. The fronts are standard bicycle fronts, we need to design the backs of the card. I have the following design requests: - I want a red and a blue back design. - the backs should have a white border, like classic bicycle backs - the backs shall incorporate, in a VERY ABSTRAHISED way, my logo "42", which I am attaching hereto. Do NOT use the "law" part, JUST the "42"! - please DO NOT COPY the bicycle back design. That's copyright infringement. Their standard design is suitable for achieving the goal described in the next bullet point. BUT we need an ORIGINAL design that works in this way. - MOST IMPORTANT, SPECIAL FEATURE: my decks have to be MARKED. See other comments for more details on this.
As mentioned above, I want to print MARKED decks. Marked decks are playing cards that have markings on the back that are barely visible for someone not looking for the markings, but ideally easy to see by the magician. Just by looking at the markings on the back of the card for a second, the magician can tell what card he is looking at. (For background, read this: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=102913&forum=109&start=30) I have a very specific marking system in mind, which is known among magicians as the "Boris Wild"-marking system. You can see an example of the markings here: http://images.penguinmagic.com/images/soc_products/large/boriswildmarked-alt1.jpg I have also attached four pictures of marked backs, where I highlighted the marking with a black circle. The idea is simple: - In each deck of 52 cards, there are 4 "suits" (hearts, clubs, spades, diamonds) and 13 cards in each suit (king, queen, jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, ace). - All the markings are printed on the vertical sides of each card, i.e., on BOTH vertical sides. - One of four vertical positions on the side of each card is assigned to each suit (clubs, hearts, spades, diamonds). - The letter A is assigned to the ace, and the numbers 2 to 13 are assigned to the remaining 12 cards in each suit (e.g.; "A" is ace, "13" is king, "9" is a nine). - ACCORDINGLY, by printing, for example, an A at the top of the left side, the magician looking at the back knows he is looking at the "Ace of Hearts". By printing, for example, a "9" at the bottom of the card, the magician knows he is looking at the "9 of clubs". Please look at the attached example, and also check out the examples here: - Find the "13" here: http://images.penguinmagic.com/images/soc_products/large/boriswildmarked-alt1.jpg - Find the "A" here: http://cardsfm.ru/published/publicdata/ZYTOSHOPSCRIPT/attachments/SC/products_pictures/ultimate-marked-deck-card11r_enl.jpg - Find the "1" here: - http://www.martinsmagic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/boris-wild-marked-deck-pack_2.jpg What I need from you, is one back design that does both: (i) incorporate an abstrahized version of "42"; and (ii) is well-suited to incorporate Boris Wild markings, easily detectable by the magician but difficult to find by laypeople who do not know about the markings. The deck should be printed in both red and blue.

And then… they selected a winner!
To sum it up, Art Bearman did a really great job! He was always very responsive and implemented change requests very fast. Furthermore, he did more than he actually would've to.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
