Divvy is a site that connects neighbors who want to share WiFi and split the internet bill. New users enter their physical address and are shown other people from the same building who have signed up. If two people are in WiFi range of each other they can agree to share. One of them continues to pay for internet access through an ISP as usual. The other pays $35/month to the first user in exchange for access to their WiFi network. Plenty of people already share internet with their neighbors, but we solve two pain points. First, with Divvy you don't have to know your neighbors or knock on strangers' doors. Second, we handle the billing so that you never have to bug your neighbor about a missed payment. Since WiFi signals have limited range, our audience consists of only people living in apartment buildings.
What's your vision?
- Contest Challenge - It's fairly easy to advertise online and find users that want to sign up. But it's very rare that two new users will just happen to be neighbors, which is what we need. The central challenge we face is in getting a new user to actively recruit in their building for a neighbor to share with. To encourage users to reach out to their neighbors we want to mail print materials to each person who searches on Divvy. Our intention is that the new user could post a flier for Divvy in a common area of the building or slip fliers under their neighbors' doors. This contest is for the design of such a flier (8.5 x 11). It will need to explain the concept of Divvy and encourage the reader to visit the site to sign up. Ideally the concept will be explained both through text and visually, through illustrations or graphics. Someone glancing at the flier in passing should be able to quickly grasp what the service is and why it benefits them. ** Update ** I'm relying on users themselves to post the flier in their building common areas or slip it under neighbors' doors. This means flier needs to motivate two different actions. The obvious one is that someone who sees the flier should be motivated to go to the site and sign up. Equally important is that someone who signs up online and receives the flier in the mail should be motivated to show it to their neighbors. This latter is mostly about the feel of the flier. More like a friendly message between neighbors and less like an ad. The images on the flier, whether stock photos or illustrations, need to very clearly indicate what the service is about--neighbors sharing a single WiFi network and saving money by splitting the internet bill. I'm most interested in seeing fliers that have a large prominent illustration that gets the point across. Something that invokes some or all of: apartment buildings, neighbors, WiFi, sharing and saving money. I'm not absolutely opposed to stock photos, but I'm guessing it will be difficult to find stock photos that convey this and keep an informal neighborly feel. ------------------------------------------- - Design Style - The site itself hasn't launched yet and we don't have a brand identity other than a simple logo. So feel free to style the flier in any way and create a distinctive looks and feel. If we're happy with the winning design, we'll likely contract the winning designer for other needs, particularly the website. We don't have final copy written, and once we do we expect to continue to tweak the copy between print runs. So the design should be somewhat flexible about final wording. The basic text elements that we'll need are logo, headline, benefit statements, and call-to-action. As far as graphics, we're thinking one central illustration that shows a cutout of an apartment building with a WiFi signal in one apartment going through the wall to a laptop in the adjacent apartment. Or maybe three different graphics, one each for Search, Share and Save. Not looking for them to be complex...it's fine to use the simplest possible iconography that conveys the concept of two neighbors sharing WiFi. Again, we'd like for someone that just glances at the flier to be able to quickly grasp the concept and the benefits to them. ------------------------------------------- - Example Text/Copy - Logo: see attached file. Possibly with a subheading like "WiFi Sharing" or "WiFi Sharing for Neighbors". Headline: something like "Share Internet with Your Neighbors. Save Money. No hassles." Or "Do you pay too much for internet? Share WiFi with your neighbor and save big." Benefit Statements: We're using three bullet points to explain what we do--"Search, Share, Save". Copy might look like this: Search Search on Divvy to find a neighbor that wants to split the internet bill. Share Quickly and easily set up WiFi sharing between you and your neighbor. Save Get paid $35/month for letting your neighbor use your WiFi or pay $35/month to use your neighbor's WiFi. Everyone saves! Call to Action: something like "Go to divvywifi.com to split your internet bill with a neighbor." The URL should be prominent, so that someone who just glances at the flier might remember the URL later. We're completely flexible on copy. So if you have a design that needs more or less text that's fine.
