Description of the organization and its target audience
We provide training services and materials for the North American Railroad Industry. Target audience includes training departments and trainers at mostly freight railroads and a little to passenger railroads, repair shops, manufacturers serving our industry, and other industry that use railroads and need some types of railroad related training or information. Individuals within these organizations could include HR personnel, supervisors at all levels that work with people performing maintenance on freight cars, locomotives, track, signaling and other work. In the list below I selected 'Education' as our industry, but we very much consider ourselves to be a part of the railroad industry (over 100 years now.)

Other notes
The attached brief contains a lot of information. I've included some examples of logo designs that we thought are interesting, but by no means are we only looking for designs with books. If some imagery from railroads can be incorporated that would be good. If imagery from railroads is used be sure to look at the North American market because that is our main focus and it is different in design from European railroading.
We like blue colors, but we want to leave that up to the designer.
We are currently working on a new website and look forward to being able to incorporate the new logo in that site.
Although there are no examples of this shown above yet, I also like logos that use unique fonts in the name and braking some of the lines (strokes, or partial strokes) of the characters up using different colors.
I do think monogram logo would work well for our logo. Obvious examples include the IBM, HBO, CNN, NASA.

If you use fonts that require a license, confirm with the client they're ok with it. For licensing reasons, it is better to provide your client with information on how to acquire the font rather than providing the actual files.
Text in logos should be converted to outlines.
I like that the logo tries in part to suggest media with the dialog circle and the callout triangle in the lower left side. It might be a little busy, not sure what the balloon is about. I do like playing with the "o" character.0
